When you love someone with an addiction, you develop your own ways to cope. Often, life begins to revolve around getting others help. Even when a patient begins treatment, anger and resentment can linger.
We believe in treating the whole family system, and involving loved ones in the treatment process. We offer programs for both adults and children who love someone with a substance use disorder.
We understand the challenges of having a family member in treatment. Every effort is made to include family during this time through counsellor contact, family conferences and open communication regarding patient progress. If you have a loved one in treatment please complete and return our QUESTIONNAIRE FOR CONCERNED PERSONS form as soon as possible as this is a valuable tool used to help us provide the best patient care possible for your family member.
*Please note: You are more than welcome to send your loved one cards or flowers while in treatment; however, please avoid sending heavily scented flowers such as lilies due to extreme allergies and compromised immune systems that may occur in our patient body.
Regular Family Education Days are also offered free of charge. Please check our calendar of events to find the next session.
Insite is a five day program designed specifically for adults whose loved ones suffer from substance use disorders.
The first goal of Insite is to help individuals identify their feelings and understand themselves. The second is to restore a sense of self-worth and confidence, through group therapy, educational lectures, guest speakers and participation in a therapeutic community.
Our program helps individuals rebuild their lives by teaching addiction coping techniques that help repair relationships and bring broken families back together.
We focus on the following:
- Interpersonal relationships
- Generational patterns of addiction
One of the many benefits of the program is connecting with other patients in similar situations. Having 12-15 participants per session establishes a close connection with peers and facilitators. The relationships a patient makes during Insite become their support network after the program is completed.
Additionally, Insite includes a credit towards continuing care. In continuing care, patients have regular access to a counsellor, so they can maintain the progress they have achieved over the duration of the program.
Those who participate in the Insite program who are from out of town will be provided with a list of recommended local accommodations to help make your stay in Nanaimo and experience at Edgewood more enjoyable.
When moms, dads, and other family members suffer from addiction, Edgewood has a program to help their children learn and heal. Bounce Back is a three day program that provides a safe, fun environment for kids to freely explore and express their feelings. It helps them develop a sense of belonging, overcome feelings of isolation, and better understand what’s happening. Because, ultimately, addiction affects the whole family; and children are the most vulnerable.
Children are encouraged to explore their feelings through fun activities, such as:
- Art and craft projects
- Group Talks
