Head Nurse

The primary function of the Head Nurse is to direct medical care of patients as part of a multidisciplinary team, supervising other Nursing staff on duty, and overseeing follow up of medical care from other shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Triage patient care with other health care professionals such as physicians, pharmacist, lab technicians, Psychiatric and Medical Director.
  • Follow up with patients following assessments by Physicians – charting, booking of further appointments, etc.
  • Direct bedside care when necessary, (ie. bathing, Critical Care, etc.)
  • Responsible for daily “Medical Follow Up” as noted on the form, including ordering and maintaining patient medications.
  • Oversee storage of discontinued medications and regular returns to pharmacy for destruction.
  • Ordering, maintaining and monitoring doses of House Medications.
  • Ensure TB testing of patients is carried out in a timely manner.
  • Ensure patients and staff are vaccinated annually for influenza.
  • Ensure other patient vaccinations are carried out as necessary.
  • Responsible for patient detox scales as per Pharmacotherapy & Detox policies.
  • Makes patient medications available as prescribed, documenting in the medications log.
  • Be available to patients who are experiencing difficulties.
  • Immediately notify senior staff in the event of any emergency or unusual circumstance.
  • Document in the appropriate log book significant occurrences during the shift.
  • Participate in case consultation and treatment coordination with other members of the multi-disciplinary team when required.
  • Administer first aid in case of emergency and refer patients to medical care as the Clinical Team deems necessary.
  • Answers telephone calls and handles all calls as instructed.
  • Participates in in-service workshops as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Support Staff Supervisor or Clinical Director, including assisting with Nurse’s Performance Appraisals.
  • Participate as a member of the Health and Safety Committee when appointed by the Executive Director
  • In the event of emergency evacuation during the shift, be responsible for the safe evacuation of bed-ridden patients.
  • Completion of Physician Discharge Summaries, including faxing to the patient’s family physician.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of recent experience as a Nurse.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by the Clinical Manager, including assisting with Nurse’s Performance Appraisals.
  • Participate as a member of the Health and Safety Committee when appointed by the Executive Director.
  • In the event of emergency evacuation during the shift, be responsible for the safe evacuation of bed-ridden patients.
  • Completion of Physician Discharge Summaries, including faxing to the patient’s family physician.
  • Maintain a follow-up log of all medical and/or psychiatric Requests for Information, documenting when received, or re-sending as necessary.
