Drug and Alcohol Addiction Program

Our comprehensive treatment for drugs and alcohol is an evidence-based treatment approach with over 30 years of research, experience, and client feedback. We provide a healing environment that meets the needs of people in recovery from addiction, trauma and eating disorders.

Patients and clients receive personalized treatment plans from a team of addiction and mental health specialists. Each client is assigned their own addiction physician and counsellor, both of whom work with them throughout treatment as well as group therapy. Additional support is provided by nutritionists, fitness instructors, nurses, and the remainder of the clinical team contribute to the client’s holistic experience.

Bellwood’s psychiatrist is available to address any concurrent mental health issues, and patients interact with a therapeutic community, including volunteers who are often in their own recovery.

Addiction Education

Learning more about addiction is a key step on the journey of recovery. By gaining insight into the physical, psychological, and social effects of addiction, patients gain a better understanding of themselves and the challenges that lie ahead.
At Bellwood, clients participate in daily education sessions, facilitated by physicians and counsellors.

Group and Individual Therapy with Experienced Counsellors

During treatment, patients work with addiction-trained counsellors who help them sort through their issues, and teach them how to work through them.
Patients meet with counsellors both individually and in group settings. Group Therapy is an extremely valuable experience that allows patients to learn and heal alongside others with similar issues, challenges, and goals for recovery.

Medical Care

Each patient is assigned a personal physician who is available to them throughout treatment. Additionally, 24-hour nursing coverage ensures safety and a quick response to medical emergencies and support during withdrawal from substances, at any hour of the day or night.

Food & Nutrition Program

Our nutritionists who provide education about healthy eating and assist patients in creating their own nutritional recovery plan. They work closely with our talented chefs to develop delicious and healthy menus. Our meal plan places an emphasis on protein rich foods, which help in the production of neurotransmitters and repair the damage incurred from addiction. This helps patients meet their nutritional needs, increase energy levels and mood, reduce anxiety and cravings, and restore normal gastrointestinal health.

Fitness, Leisure and Relaxation

Our patients take part in regular exercise classes that help improve energy levels, mood and self-esteem. Activities include, but are not limited to, exercise and yoga classes, regular walks, and fun outings. If a patient is unsure whether the level of exercise is appropriate, our physicians and physical health instructors will provide guidance.
Relaxation is an important coping skill that relieves anxiety and actually improves health. This is why our patients participate in relaxation and mindfulness classes, and have access to massage therapy.

Relapse Prevention

Developing a personal relapse prevention plan is a critical part of recovering from addiction.
During treatment, patients work with our counsellors to identify their potential risks and triggers, and develop a personalized plan for managing these risks.

Recovery Toolkit

We utilize a wide variety of therapy and recovery approaches, because different approaches work for different people. We help patients build their own toolkit of resources, coping skills, and insights. Patients are taught a variety of skill that are important to recovery, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), grounding and relaxation, communication, and problem-solving. They also receive an introduction to 12-step programs, and experience the programs firsthand.
